She gave birth to a boy, later named Damodar Rao, in 1851, who died when four months old. Manikarnika was married to the Maharaja of Jhansi, Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, in 1842 and was afterwards called Lakshmibai (or Laxmibai) in honour of the goddess Lakshmi. She was educated at home and was more independent in her childhood than others of her age her studies included shooting, horsemanship, and fencing. The Peshwa called her "Chhabili", which means "playful". Her father worked for a court Peshwa of Bithoor district who brought Manikarnika up like his own daughter. Her father was Moropant Tambe and her mother Bhagirathi Sapre (Bhagirathi Bai). She was named Manikarnika and was nicknamed Manu. The hours devoted to training for the battle scenes have been increased and the actors are up at the crack of dawn to rehearse for the major war that is currently being shot. And war indeed it is! In their efforts to recreate the battle of Bithur to perfection, the team is pulling out all stops and has laid a very strict training regimen for the cast. We have seen big Bollywood stars get fit & beef up for a particular role but the sets of Zee TV’s Jhansi Ki Rani looks like the battle ground in preparation for war. It’s no mean task to essay a historical character like Jhansi Ki Rani especially when the story track revolves around the famous battles she fought.
